Bangladesh faces a growing challenge of urban poverty amidst rapid urbanization. While rural poverty rates have declined, urban poverty remains persistent, characterized by issues such as unemployment, high living costs, and limited social safety nets. Despite efforts to reduce poverty, urban areas lag behind rural regions in poverty alleviation. Factors contributing to urban poverty include migration patterns, occupational disparities, and inadequate social protection schemes. Addressing urban poverty requires tailored interventions and policies to ensure the economic and social well-being of urban populations.
Objectives:
The main objective of the study is to develop a framework for how urban poverty should be understood, its dimensions and characteristics, how the urban poor will be covered through social protection schemes, and what kinds of schemes will be feasible for them. The specific objectives are:
- To understand the dimensions and characteristics of urban poverty
- To identify the urban poor who are eligible for social protection supports
- To identify the types of social protection supports required for the well-being of the urban poor
- To understand the accessibility of urban poor to different services and supports required for their survival and wellbeing.
