The upcoming LDC graduation means that the country will lose the current trade preferences in major markets and other international support measures, putting pressure on export competitiveness. Hence, export diversification has become more important than ever to ensure continued export expansion. Besides this, the country is confronted with serious labour market challenges. The outsourcing market, especially the IT-related segment, is considered a key potential sector for boosting export diversification as well as employment generation. This sector has experienced robust growth in recent years, indicating a huge untapped potential.
However, lack of skilled human resource has been considered a major challenge undermining the growth prospects of IT outsourcing industry. Against this backdrop, this study will shed light on the current and future skills demanded by employers in the IT outsourcing industry, primarily catering high-end services to international clients. The study focuses on the immediate future requirements of employers for penetrating into high-value segment of the offshore market as well as upgrading their current outsourcing services. It also aims to identify the means through which the required skills could be developed amongst the workforce, contributing to human resource development, and enhancing the country’s competitiveness and exports.
