Impacts of COVID-19 in the Tannery Industrial Estate in Bangladesh
About the project
Partner: The Asia Foundation, Bangladesh.
Project duration: March 2022 - April 2022
Like other export-oriented industries, the COVID 19 pandemic has disrupted the production, manufacturing processes, productivity, and supply chain of leather tanning industry in every way (Bangladesh Labor Foundation, 2020). During the first wave of COVID 19, many international buyers have cancelled orders and thus only 30 per cent of the tanneries have been operational at Savar. Therefore, the tanneries and leather industry had faced a massive financial loss of more than USD 300 million (Bangladesh Labor Foundation, 2020). Moreover, during the pandemic-induced shutdown periods, when the workers have lost their employment, they find difficulties in terms of meeting their livelihoods (UNIDO, 2021). On this backdrop, it is, therefore, important to understand the overarching impact of COVID-19 on the performance of tannery industry as well as on the lives and livelihoods of tannery workers and how they cope with the challenges of the pandemic. This study has assessed the impact of COVID-19 on the employment, wages, and occupational safety and health (OSH) of workers, their collective bargaining and association rights on the one hand, and business conditions and challenges facing the employers on the other.
